CESSNA CITATION CJ1 AND CJ1 PLUS

CESSNA CITATION CJ1 AND CJ1 PLUS

  • Passengers 6

Based on the original CitationJet, the Citation CJ1 and the upgraded CJ1+ are among the most successful private jets in their class. Comfortably seating five passengers, bothlight jets are perfect for short-haul flights.

About this aircraft

  • Cessna manufactured the Citation CJ1 between 2000 and 2005.
  • The aircraft can be single-pilot operated, but no passengers can sit in the cockpit during a chartered flight. Charters can take a maximum of six passengers, with one seated in the enclosed lavatory.
  • Baggage can be stored in the nose and tail cone, with room for up to seven suitcases.
  • The CJ1 has low operational costs and is extremely fuel-efficient, burning an average of 134 gallons per hour.
  • In 2004, Cessna announced the release of the upgraded Cessna Citation CJ1+.

The first CJ light jet took off over 30 years ago. The series has since evolved to meet the needs of the modern-day customer, with the CJ1 launching in 2000 followed by the upgraded CJ1+ in 2004. The CJ1+ has higher speeds and new features including an FMS performance database, electronic checklist and maintenance diagnostics.

Interior design

Both the CJ1 and CJ+1 usually feature five seats in a club arrangement, foldout tables, a small galley and a lavatory. The CJ1+ has improved soundproofing for a quieter onboard environment, while optional entertainment functions can be added to suit clients’ needs.

Below is the standard configuration inside a CJ1. Extra passengers can be seated in the cockpit and rear lavatory if required.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • The CJ1 was specifically designed to operate on short runways, so it can access more hard-to-reach places.
  • Due to its cabin size, there’s no flight attendant on board when in flight.
  • The CJ1 and the CJ1+ can be flown by only one pilot, supported by modern avionics systems that significantly reduce workload in the cockpit.
  • The CJ1+ is generally more modern and features interior upgrades like a left-hand belted flushing toilet, cockpit overhead lining and indirect lighting.

Technological features

The CJ1 is extremely fuel-efficient thanks to two Williams FJ44-1A turbofan engines, each delivering 1,900 lbs of thrust on takeoff.

The aircraft is fitted with ProLine 21 avionics, with three flat-panel LCD screens that can operate as primary flight displays and multi-function displays.

History

The original CitationJet, Model 525, completed its inaugural flight in 1991, followed by FAA certification in 1992 and the first delivery in 1993. The CJ1 was the second aircraft in the series, with almost 200 of the aircraft produced between 2000 and 2005.

Manufacturer

The Cessna Aircraft Company began in 1927, when Kansas-based farmer and mechanic Clyde V. Cessna assembled a French Bleriot plane from a kit using his own water-cooled engines. Cessna became famous for manufacturing small-sized piston-powered aircraft for private and business use.

In 1940, Cessna signed a contract to produce 33 T-50s for the US Army and later made 180 more of the jets for the Canadian Air Force. The company expanded to make corporate jets and has since become the industry’s leading private jet manufacturer, thanks partly to its incredibly popular Citation XLS range.

Cessna was bought by General Dynamics in 1985, before global conglomerate Textron – which also makes Beechcraft and Hawker aircraft – acquired the brand in 1995. Textron specialises in creating bespoke mission-specific jets for government, military and commercial customers. Today, Cessna produces turboprops, pistons and private jets.

Cost

Jet prices depend on many factors including production year, but the cost of a CJ1 typically starts from around $2 million (USD).
